Historic House to be Restored and Remodeled after Devastating Fire

In the spring of 2012, a second floor fire partially destroyed this 1812 home set on 220 acres of hilltop property overlooking the Hudson River, south of Albany. Architex assisted the owner in exploring functional and aesthetic redesign options through several stages of design development. Major remodeling work will include reconstruction of the south wing with a side entry/mudroom addition, new front entry addition, new sunroom/greenhouse addition, and a larger second floor balcony addition.

Interior alterations will provide the owner with a new first floor kitchen and butler's pantry, laundry space, a second stair access to the basement and four full baths. Restoration work will include a new roof, uncovering the original siding, replacing damaged eaves and trim work, repairing and restoring fireplaces and brick chimneys, and re-finishing of the original plank flooring.

The owner's most recent request to gain living space and better use of the existing basement will require removal of the concrete slab floor, excavating over 16" of earth and underpinning and re-pointing of the original stone foundation walls. The remodeled basement will offer a legal bedroom suite with separate access for a future caretaker along with a sauna, wine cellar, wood floors with radiant slab heat, brick columns and exposed timber ceiling joists.

The entire house will be refitted with new electrical and plumbing systems and will use geo-thermal technology for heating and cooling.
